On this page you’ll find stories of successful matches between rescued LRROF dogs and their families.  These stories are written by the families themselves.  We hope you enjoy reading them as much as much as we do! Please note that we post the stories as volunteer time permits.

Duke

On November 3, 2018, we agreed to foster Duke for Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida. Between Lab and Golden rescues, we had fostered approximately 35 dogs over the years prior to Duke’s arrival. Our previous Lab, Shadow, was a foster through LRRoF whom we eventually adopted due to his behavioral issues making him a safety risk according to Rescue’s dog behaviorists. Shadow had died three years prior and we were ready to seriously considering adopting again. We are Duke’s (at least) third home. He was picked up by animal control in Indiana, and because he was microchipped, we learned his birthdate and that his real name IS Duke. The microchip company told us that they had spent months trying to contact the registered owners, but received no reply. At 5 years old, Duke was adopted from the Indiana shelter by Mary, who had owned him for about one year and brought him to her winter home in southwest Florida. He proved to be too much for her to handle. His energy level was off the charts and he was too strong for her to safely walk, his prey drive having ultimately landed Mary on the ground several times. Mary took excellent care of him and tried her very best, providing consistent training, veterinary care, socialization and mental stimulation. Mary decided to relinquish him to LRRoF and brought him to our home in Ft. Myers that afternoon. Once I saw him out of her car, I literally cried. I knew this was the dog I wanted to keep. Duke’s initial sell...

Dixie

This is my second time adopting through LRROF. I adopted Dixie from Larry Meenie. I was looking for a sweet girl who was good with cats. Dixie did not disappoint. She really loves her kitties and gives them a bath daily. When I saw her profile on LRRoF.....I knew she was the one I needed. Her name is very special to me cause that was my mother's name who I had lost years earlier to cancer. Dixie is very much loved. She is also extremely spoiled. She loves going to a local park and playing on the beach. She also loves riding with the top down and her hot pink glasses on!! Dixie recently showed how much she loved me by saving our lives. We were walking around the backyard and she was at my side and she stopped. Her hair started to rise and I looked down to see a 4 1/2 foot Rattlesnake coiled. We backed up slowly and got my husband to kill it. She could have heard it or sensed it!! I guess somehow my mother was looking out for me!!

Dawson

We rescued a yellow female Labrador in 2008 but sadly had to have her put to sleep in 2013. We were all devastated and were unable to consider adopting another dog until a few months ago. We had been checking the LRRoF site, and filled out an application. The area director contacted us and we were approved! We knew it might be a bit of a wait but it wasn't too long before we got a call about black male Labrador in need of a home. We visited him a couple of times at his wonderful foster mom's home and all of us agreed he was the one!. He's been with us almost a month now, is still adjusting but he's quite lovely; we all love him to pieces!!

Daisy

We would like to thank Lab Rescue for helping us find our sweet girl Daisy (AKA Frida). We worked with Trish, our adoption counselor, for a while to find the right lab for our family. We searched near and far and were determined to find our lab. Trish worked hard for us and we knew the right one would find us eventually. One day I received a call from Trish telling us she found our girl. We went to meet Frida and it was love at first sight. She is so beautiful, silly, and sweet. Foster mom Tandy was also such a pleasure to meet and is such a wonderful person. We can’t thank her enough for taking great care of Daisy until we found her. My husband and I couldn’t be happier and would like to thank everyone for all of their dedication and effort throughout this entire process. They have been so amazing and Lab Rescue is such a wonderful organization. Without all of you, we wouldn’t have found our sweet Daisy who fills our home with so much love.

Dixie

This is my second Lab with LRRoF. I was looking for a lab that was cat friendly. I inherited when my mother passed in 2011. After searching for a few months I came across Dixie as soon as she appeared on LRRoF. She was cat friendly and a beautiful yellow girl. I contacted the foster to get directions to come see her and he lived in Ormond on a street named Bay Lake Ct. ( I live in a subdivision in Saint Cloud called Bay Lake Ranch) The beautiful yellow girls name is Dixie. Dixie was my mother's name. I knew then she would be perfect. Dixie is a wonderful yellow girl. She just loves her " kitties" and enjoys giving them a daily bath. she loves showing off her nails after getting them painted. We enjoy going to the local dog park where she loves to play with all her new friends. Again " Thank You" LRRoF and a special thanks to Larry for this beautiful sweet girl!!

Dixie

Rachel is now Dixie. She is very smart. Came with her siblings and mother from Alabama where they were scheduled for execution. She is very sensitive to my disorientation at times when we go walking or camping or to the store. I had a brain injury in 1999 and she has naturally picked up on my needs and helping me. She loves to go camping with our family and adores children. She has developed some occasional hip pain at a very young age exacerbated by a lot of outdorr play so I am careful to limit her activities. Upon reasearching the risks associated with spaying prior to one year of age, I was disgusted. You rather than educate and provide incentives for spaying after one year as recommended did it while she was a puppy and thus predisposed her to osteosarcoma and thyroid problems. I regret this. I hope you will consider education and incentives in the future. At the time, I questioned this as an RN and also from being told in years past that the dog should be at least a year old or have had one cycle. I was informed by your staff that there was no problem with spaying puppies. WRONG! Dishonesty will never pay off in the end.

Dallas

We rescued Diamond 10 years ago. We knew instantly he was the new family member after spending time with him at the Meet and Greet at Petco. We went through the process of adopting him and were very pleased with the home visit and application. LRROF truly has the best interest for the placement of these loving dogs. After some conversation we changed Diamonds name to Dallas which he took to quickly. Dallas was with us until last week. He was our best friend for 10 years and is truly missed. He was a true LAB and missed his calling as a Service Dog. Dallas amazed us everyday with his intelligence, patients and careful stride with my elderly grandmother and children. He loved to cuddle and sit next to you. We will adopt again from LRROF but need time to heal over the loss of our best friend.
